Hymn of the Hidden Stele
A prayer that praises and invokes the all-encompassing, all-powerful, all-generating Aiōn as the god of all gods, as given in the Greek Magical Papyri, specifically PGM IV.1115—1166. Although included in Mead’s Hymns of Hermes, Mead does away with the barbarous words throughout the text and alters the translation; Betz in his translation of the PGM offers a more faithful translation of the text. The PGM does not prescribe a use for it, only calling it a “hidden stele” or “secret tablet” (the specific word used here is αποκρυφος, which is one of my favorite words). This hymn is a beautiful invocation of all the aspects, powers, and forces of Aiōn, and suggests its use in a community of similarly-aligned religious or spiritual specialists.
